LUSK - Every two minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer. There is a 1 in 8 chance that a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That point came home to Sheila Youngquist when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month and to raise awareness and support for Sheila and other women who have overcome breast cancer, the Niobrara community hospital held a 5k run/walk. The walk started at the hospital and looped through the community. Youngquist, while unable to walk herself, accompanied the walkers in a white and pink mustang owned by Shawn Stewart.

In addition to the 5k a corn hole tournament and pulled pork lunch were held to raise money to help offset Youngquist’s expenses.

Lusk has had its share of cancer diagnosis with Youngquist sharing a diagnosis with her mother who was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. Early detection is instrumental in the treatment of all cancers and particularly breast cancer. More than 90% of women who develop breast cancer will live more than 5 years. Treatment and research continue to make progress but for those walking on Saturday, and the millions more that are impacted by breast cancer, even one percent is too many.
