13 Tigers tracksters qualify for State tournament

The Tiger track teams were in Gillette to compete at the 2A East Regional Track Meet on Friday and Saturday.  The girls qualified 7 girls for the state competition while the boys qualified 6.

The girls’ team was very competitive as they finished the meet in 4th place scoring 58.5 points, a half of a point behind third place finisher Sundance.  The boys finished in 10th place scoring 29 points.

The girls had numerous girls qualify in multiple events.

Miranda Gilkey qualified in three individual events.  She tied a career best in winning the high jump at 5’ 2”.  She also won a silver medal in the triple jump going 34’ 4.5” and placed 8th in the 300 hurdles in a time of 53.37. 

Taylor Gaukel won a bronze medal in triple jump going a career best 34’ 4” while placing 4th in the 100 hurdles.  She will also compete at state in the 300 hurdles as she was prequalified in that event.

Tillie Schmidt had a nice weekend as she won silver in the high jump going 4’ 10”, bronze in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.06, and 7th in the 100 meter dash in 14.12.

Thrower Marie Hendrickson picked up a pair of 6th places as she threw a career best 103’ 4” in the discus and 32’ 10.25” in the shot put.  Team member Mackenzie Lyons will join her at state in the shot put as she will compete since she was prequalified in the event.

Freshman Miranda Mosley will compete in her first state track meet in the pole vault as she placed 7th in a very competitive field clearing 8’ 3”.  Jalyn McDaniel was also prequalified in pole vault and will join Mosley this week at state.

The girls’ 4 X 400 relay of Mosley, Gaukel, Schmidt, and Gilkey ran a season’s best time of 4:25 to place 4th and qualify for state.

Gaukel, Schmidt, and Gilkey will be competing in four events this weekend.

On the boys’ side, Riley Ross was an inch from a career best in pole vault as he cleared 12’ 5” to win bronze, while teammate Jacob Muir placed 7th in the pole vault clearing 11’ 5”.  Muir’s previous best mark was 10’ 5”.

Alec Penfield high jumped very well, but lost in a jump off to Thompson of Pine Bluffs clearing 6’.  Fellow jumper Teagan Tschacher had a 2 inch career best to clear 5’ 7” and place 8th to qualify for state.

Thrower Jake Heil threw the shot well to place 7th in that event.  He beat the 8th place competitor by just over an inch throwing 43’ 3.25”.

The final qualifier for the boys was Traylin Bruegger as he won a silver medal in the 300 hurdles in a time of 41.54.  Bruegger was also prequalified in the 110 hurdles and missed out on the finals by .01 seconds.

The Tigers head to Casper on Thursday to compete at Kelly Walsh High School for the Wyoming State Track Meet.
