Tiger tracksters impress at Upton

UPTON – Both the Niobrara County high school and middle school track teams headed to Upton for the Mick Tonkel Classic on Friday, April 12. The boys scored 73.5 points to place fifth as a team while the girls scored 42.5 points to place seventh.

Senior Cory Bruegger continued his hot streak by winning the 400-meters with a prequalifying time of 52.44 seconds. He also had a personal best in the triple jump of almost 43 feet to win silver, plus an 11-foot pole vault to place third.

Future Chadron State Eagle David West also had a great day placing second in the 800- and 1600-meters. His time in the 1600 of 4 minutes, 50 seconds prequalifies him for state in that event. West also earned third place in the pole vault.

Hurdler Isaac Assman continues to run personal bests each week. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.63 seconds and was third in the 300-hurdles at 46.41 seconds.

Thrower Raynce Brott placed in both of his events. He continues to improve each week in the discus with a throw of over 122 feet to place third. He also placed fourth in the shot put going just shy of 40 feet.

Corbin Matthews ran a personal best in the 800-meters to place eighth with a time of 2:28.

The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of West, Bruegger, Gabe Matthews and Brady Swisher ran a nice time of 3:53 to earn silver. The 4x100-relay of the Matthews brothers, Swisher and Assman placed seventh at 52.27 seconds.

On the girls’ side, thrower Phoebe Allbright led the way with a gold medal in the shot put. She won the event with a prequalifying throw of 33 feet, 1 ¼ inches. She also placed fifth in the discus.

Freshman Marleigh Smith had another great day. She placed second in the high jump, clearing 4-09. She was also fourth in the 100-hurdles, timing in with a personal best of 18.39 seconds, and fifth in the pole vault, clearing 7-00.

Senior Taci Bartschi performed well. She won bronze in the pole vault, clearing 7-00, and also placed sixth in the 200-meters with a season’s best time of 31.02 seconds.

Abby Glavan had two eighth-place finishes in the long jump and 100-meters, both with best times for the season.

Thrower Kyra Willey had a great day. She placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 27-05.

The Tigers travel to Pine Bluffs on Friday for the Kendra Roeder Invite.

• 100-meters: Cody Himes in 17th place at 12.85 seconds, Connor Luker in 19th at 13.26 and Corben Emerson in 32nd at 15.87.

• 200-meters: Luker in 17th place at 27.53 seconds.

• 400-meters: Bruegger in first place at 52.44 seconds and Gabe Matthews in 10th at 1:01.92.

• 800-meters: West in second place at 2:13, Corbin Matthews in eighth at 2:28.25 and Brady Swisher in 13th at 2:34.54.

• 1600-meters: West in second place at 4:50.03.

• 110-hurdles: Assman in first place at 16.63 seconds.

• 300-hurdles: Assman in third place at 46.41 seconds.

• 4x100-relay: Corbin Matthews, Gabe Matthews, Swisher and Assman in seventh place at 52.27 seconds.

• 4x400-relay: Bruegger, West, Gabe Matthews and Swisher in second place at 3:53.68.

• Pole vault: Bruegger and West in third place at 11-00.

• Long jump: Swisher in 15th place at 16-05 ½, Corbin Matthews in 18th place at 15-02 ½, Luker in 19th at 14-11 and Emerson in 20th at 10-02.

• Triple jump: Bruegger in second place at 42-10 ½.

• Shot put: Brott in fourth place at 39-11 ¼, Cian Kimes in 16th at 28-03 ¾, Ron Krueger in 19th at 27-04 and Clay Willey in 22nd at 25-00 ½.

• Discus: Brott in third place at 122-03, Kimes in 22nd place at 70-07, Willey in 24th at 64-05 and Krueger in 29th at 57-07.

Girls results

• 100-meters: Glavan in eighth place at 14.28 seconds and Bartschi in 13th at 15.00 seconds.

• 200-meters: Bartschi in sixth place at 31.02 seconds.

• 100-hurdles: Smith in fourth place at 18.39 seconds.

• High jump: Smith in second place at 4-09.

• Pole vault: Bartschi and Smith in third place at 7-00.

• Long jump: Glavan in eighth place at 12-09 ½.

• Shot put: Allbright in first place at 33-01 ¼, Willey in eighth at 27-05, Royal Kremers in 19th at 21-09 ¼ and Heidi DesEnfants in 22nd at 20-10.

• Discus: Allbright in fifth place at 87-10, Willey in 10th at 76-09 and DesEnfants in 24th at 51-03.
