The Niobrara County High School outdoor track team posted new prequalifying times and marks at the Wheatland Invitational.

WHEATLAND – The Tiger track teams competed in the Wheatland Invite on Thursday against mostly 3A competitors.
Senior Cory Bruegger brought home the only gold medal on the day in the triple jump where he improved his best by going 42 feet, 4.5 inches to win the event. He also brought home a silver medal in the 400-meters with an impressive time of 53.39 seconds and a fourth-place finish in the pole vault tying his personal best of 11-00.
Nathan Miller had a personal best day in the high jump clearing 6-04 to place second along with going over 19 feet in the long jump to place fourth. He just missed clearing 6-06.
Senior David West cleared 11-00 in the pole vault to place third and prequalify for State.
Hurdler Isaac Assman continued a solid start by placing in both hurdle races. He had a great time of 17.11 seconds in the 110-hurdles to place third. He also ran 46.70 seconds in the 300-hurdles to place fifth.
Freshman Raynce Brott placed seventh in the shot with a put of 40-00 ½.
All three of the boys’ relays brought home places. The 4x800-meter relay of Corbin Matthews, Gabe Matthews, Brady Swisher and West ran 9 minutes, 47 seconds to place third.
The 4x100-meter relay of Assman, Swisher, G. Matthews, and Cody Himes ran 51.41 seconds to place fifth. The 1600-meter sprint medley team of the Matthews brothers, Himes, and Charlie Gaukel placed fourth.
The boys team scored 85 points to place fifth, but were three points out of a third-place team finish.
On the girls’ side, senior thrower Phoebe Allbright had a fantastic day. She threw 97-07 in the discus to take runner up honors. She also threw just over 31-00 to place fourth in the shot put.
Freshman Marleigh Smith had a pair of prequalifications on the day. She placed third in the high jump clearing 4’-09. She also placed sixth in the pole vault clearing 7-06. Both of these marks are prequalifying marks. Her 100-hurdle time of 19.03 seconds was good for eighth.
Fellow vaulter Taci Bartschi also cleared 7-06 to place sixth and prequalify for state.
Senior Mel ZumBrunnen opened her season by placing fourth in the 400-meters, seventh in the 200-meters and sixth in the long jump. Her 15-06 1/2 long jump prequalifies her for State.
Sister Gracie ZumBrunnen was fifth in the triple jump going over 30-00 and sixth in the high jump clearing 4-07.
The girls’ 4x100-meter relay rounded out the scoring with a fourth-place finish in a time of 58.43 seconds. The team consisted of Smith, Allbright, Bartschi, and Abby Glavan.
The girls finished with 44 points and sixth place.
