Road trips tough on Tigers

GLENROCK – For the first time this season the Niobrara County High School boys’ basketball squad had back-to-back road games. Winning at Glenrock and Southeast is always difficult, and yet the Tigers let one slip away against the Herders.

Friday’s game was close throughout, and while Ryan Bruegger found two or three guys smothering him, it was Dylan Molzahn keeping NCHS close. The junior had 10 first period points as the Tigers led 14-13. Defense took over in the second as the teams combined for just nine points and were in an 18-18 halftime tie.

Walker Kupke gave NCHS a six-point lead with his 3-pointer as the period wound down, but a late basket pulled the home team within 30-26. Jayce Cummins pushed Lusk to a 35-28 lead with a trey, but when Bruegger fouled out early in the final frame, Glenrock went on a 16-7 run to overcome the Tigers.

Kupke’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off and Glenrock held on for the 44-42 win.

On Saturday the Tigers braved a winter storm for the annual trip to Yoder and the talented, experienced Cyclones scored the first 14 points. NCHS responded with the final five points of the period, but again Southeast made another run to open the second. The home team used a 12-5 run and pressure that kept the Tigers from scoring opportunities and led by 18 at the break.

Kupke and Ryan Bruegger buried 3-pointers, and Lusk had closed the gap to 10 points late in the third quarter. Despite treys from Cummins and Bruegger, NCHS couldn’t overcome the deficit in the 51-38 final score.
