Waldock signs letter of intent with Central Wyoming College

Just three days after Lusk’s graduation, a second former Lady Tiger has inked her commitment to continue her athletic career at the next level. After Miranda Gilkey signed hers to attend Chadron State for track and field earlier this month, Makayla Waldock will be taking her improving golf game to Central Wyoming College in Riverton.

An admitted newcomer to the sport, Waldock did not join the golf team until her junior year. “What a nice break for Makayla, she just started a couple years ago but has shown enough improvement to impress the CWC coaches,” said head golf coach Rich Murray. “She knows how to be a golfer, and while she hasn’t got her game refined quite yet, when she gets to Riverton she will be a great teammate and represent them well in the classroom and the course.”

It started with Waldock’s lack of success as a shot put and discus thrower, but hunger for something else to fill that void. “I started golfing in the spring of my junior year, and when we went to see the school I noticed they had a golf team,” said Waldock. “I thought it would be cool to see if I could get any tips from Head Coach Russ Holgate, and he thought it was a recruiting trip for me,” she smiled. “It just kind of happened from there.”

The Rustlers take eight golfers to each tournament and Waldock is excited to see new places and golf courses. “We go to places like Lamar, CO, McCook, NE and they went to Las Vegas last year,” Waldock added. “I’m just so thankful for all my past and current coaches that supported my decision to switch sports.”

Her plans to study Business Administration at CWC have been in place for a while but this came out of the blue to even her mother Laura. “She looked at me and said, What?, Where did you get this in your head?” said Makayla. Anyone that knows Laura can see this unfold in the Waldock kitchen with a smile.

At the recently completed spring season Waldock finished fourth in the Cowboy Conference and earned All Conference honors, in helping NCHS win the conference title.
