POCATELLO – Niobrara County High School senior Melody ZumBrunnen participated in the Simplot Games last weekend in the ICCU Dome at Idaho State University. The University of Wyoming signee received an invitation recently to compete in the long and triple jumps.
“There were over 100 competitors in the long jump, and I got to practice Wednesday,” she said. “I hit all my marks, and had some good jumps, but then when it came time, I just couldn’t hit my boards right. But I’m starting off better than last year.”
In the triple jump with over 50 entries, ZumBrunnen’s nerves had calmed and again had some nice practice jumps. She qualified with a PR of 34’6” on the first attempt, and Friday’s work was done. In the Saturday finals, competitors had to qualify after three jumps to continue.
“I got six jumps in but didn’t get to where I wanted to be, but 12th at the Simplot Games is still pretty cool,” she added.
She is the first NCHS athlete to compete at this prestigious event since Martin Fitzwater in 2015.
