NCHS golf team off to solid start in August

LUSK – The Niobrara County High School golf team got their season underway in Glenrock on August 15.

The Tigers joined varsity teams from Wright, Sundance and Glenrock as well as junior varsity teams from Thunder Basin, Campbell County, Natrona County, Kelly Walsh and Wheatland. On the girls’ side of the competition, junior Francheska Bannan showed growth from the previous year in her first competition of the Fall with a 152.

Several of the Tiger boys have spent many hours improving their skills over the summer and got a chance to demonstrate that improvement in Glenrock. Hudson Leimser shot a career best of 84 to finish in 10th place. Fellow sophomore Aubrey Manning also shot a career best of 95 to finish in the top 25. Junior Charlie Gaukel competed in his first varsity tournament and scored a 134.

The Tigers next travelled to Sundance on August 23 for their second competition of the season. The Tigers had two first time competitors with sophomore Keen Coffman and junior Corbin Matthews. Coffman shot a 126 and Matthews fired a 159.

The other team members struggled on a hot and windy day. Manning again broke the century mark with a 99 to finish in ninth, while Leimser shot a 101 for 10th place. Gaukel struggled to a 137. Bannan also had an inconsistent day shooting a 168.

Last Friday, the Tigers travelled to Keyhole Country Club to compete prior to the Labor Day weekend. The Tigers’ new golfers showed exciting growth by all posting career best scores. Gaukel and junior Joaquin Cassiano shot 120 and 113, respectively. Coffman shot a 111 for his best competitive round of the season. Leimser shot an 89 to claim 10th place. Manning was again looking to shoot in the double digits before struggling on the final two holes to shoot an even 100.

Looking forward, the Tigers have two busy weekends before the 2A State Tournament in Sheridan on September 20-21. The Tigers will travel to Wright this Friday and Newcastle on Saturday before hosting a two-day, 36-hole competition at the Niobrara County Club on September 13-14.
