LUSK - Wednesday, May 10, the LEMS students celebrated Arbor Day (it was April 28). The Niobrara Conservation District gave each grade, Pre-K through 6th and Lance Creek, a tree to plant over by the hoop houses located at LEMS. The Lance Creek kids will plant their tree, at their school, on May 16. The students learned how to properly plant a tree as well as see displays, books and be able to investigate the tree life cycle, tree cookies, different tree barks, seeds, leaves and a model of the inside of a tree trunk.
The kids will be able to watch the trees progress into the future. It is hoped the classes will use the trees for learning opportunities such as using math skills to measure and track growth, bark rubbings, watch the seasonal cycle/ life cycle, as well as friendly class challenges for things like holiday decorations, etc.
