LUSK – Volunteer fire fighters manned a different kind of fire on Saturday during the Lusk fire department’s annual BBQ and open house. For the third year running the department thanked the community for their support by offering free burgers, famous “Mayfield” French fries and a cold drink. LUSK – Volunteer fire fighters manned a different kind of fire on Saturday during the Lusk fire department’s annual BBQ and open house. For the third year running the de- partment thanked the community for their support by offering free burgers, famous “Mayfield” French fries and a cold drink. Held at the municipal fire hall, the BBQ also offered the opportu- nity for those interested to purchase a chance at the annual rifle and cooler raffle as well.

As always, the food rivaled any- thing that can be found in a three- county radius and the company was even better. Serving up brats and burgers the volunteers enjoyed chat- ting with community members.

Donations for the event were pro- vided by donors: Hanson Livestock, Decker’s, Silver $ Bar & Grill, Prairie View Campground, Dockery Ranch Beef, Thompson Seed & Potatoes, Bootheel 7 Livestock, ZumBrunnen Angus, Up & Coming 4-H Club, LVFD wives, Mayhem Meats and Niobr- ara county Rural Fire Department.

Burgers and brats with all the top- pings, fresh french fries, homemade cookies and a soft drink were served and disappeared as quickly as they could grill them. The rifle and cooler raffle names drawn were J. V. Boldon and Kevin Baars.

This year has been exceptionally busy for both the town and rural departments as high temps and low precipitation have created volatile conditions for blazes around the county and state. Firemen have pro- vided support to several fires out- side the county in addition to those that have ignited in and around Lusk, Manville, Lance Creek and Van Tassell. Volunteers work hard to maintain certifications and improve their training. They work to keep equip- ment replaced and up-to-date. All of this comes at a cost and the support the community provides in the form of donations and raffle ticket pur- chases allow the department to con- tinue to cover a large area with lim- ited personnel and do it safely. Any- one interested in volunteering who lives within the Lusk city limits are welcome to contact the city. Those living within Niobrara county and outside of Lusk can join the rural department.
