NIOBRARA COUNTY – The Niobrara County Commissioners heard from Sheriff Randy Starkey concerning open slots of employment at the Sheriff’s Office during the Niobrara County Commissioners meeting on October 1.

Sheriff Starkey informed the commis- sioners there is a Sheriff’s Deputy posi- tion, two dispatch positions and a de- tention position that were open. Sheriff Starkey also requested permission to add one more sergeant position. Adding an extra sergeant would be able to take care of calls concerning inmates and transfers as well as performing other leadership functions. The commission- ers agreed this would be a good idea and approved Sheriff Starkey’s request. Sheriff Starkey encourages anyone to visit www.niobrarasheriff.org to down- load applications or visit the Niobrara County Sheriff’s Office and request a physical application.

Road and Bridge Supervisor Fred Thomas asked the commissioner for permission to resell old auto gates to local ranchers at a discounted price. According to Thomas, this has been done before. The commissioners ap- proved this request.

Niobrara County is still seeking an individual to fill the Youth Alterna- tive Coordinator position. According to County Attorney Annie Wasserburger, this position is part-time and the coun- ty is seeking to fill it immediately.

Applicants should visit www.wyohelp. com and click on youth alternatives job description. The objective of this posi

tion is to create relationships, resources and accountability for the youth the Niobrara County. The person who fills the position will help young people overcome short- term challenges and build long term skills. They will be expected to work with a variety of Niobrara County entities, including District Circuit and Municipal courts within Niobrara County, Niobrara County attorney and Municipal Prosecu- tors, Niobrara Schools, the Lusk Police Department and Niobrara County Sheriff’s Office Family Services. Wasserburger added that this position allows one to work from home.

Clerk of District Court Chrissan- na Lund told the commissioners her department will be transitioning to e-filing this month. This means all attorneys must do an e-file when filing papers for court. Accord- ing to Lund, Judicial District is the last county in the state to go to this format.

Lund added the court could get a public access terminal that allow residents to look up court docu- ments. However, such a terminal was deemed unnecessary at this

time. If one happens to request doc- uments, then Lund can simply print them off in a hard copy. Attorneys will begin to e-file on October 15 and it will be mandatory by Janu- ary 1, 2025. Court documents will no longer come through mail or email. They will be filed through a pro- gram that includes the court stamp.

According to Lund, they will still get paperwork from people that do not have attorneys. Lund said this has changed how court filings have been done in over 100 years. The goal is to do away with paper filing. The website is called File and Serve Express.

Kellie Chichester, University Ex- tension Educator 4-H/Youth Devel- opment, said the new 4-H year offi- cially began this month. Chichester said those interested in becoming a volunteer for 4-H can sign up on- line. 4-H Achievement Day will be held on October 13 at 5 p.m. The awards celebration will be accom- panied by snacks and sandwiches. The Halloween 4-H Carnival will be held on October 31 after downtown Trick-or-Treating.

The next Niobrara County Com- missioners meeting will be held on October 15 at 9 a.m. at the Courthouse.
