ALLIANCE, NEBRASKA – The Niobrara County Tigers cross-country team traveled to Alliance on a blustery Saturday morning last week.
Sophomore Nathaniel Fadness ran a personal best in the junior varsity division race of 24 minutes, 52 seconds to place 40th out of 52. He competed well in the middle and end of the race.
Sixth-grader Paul Kruse continues to improve. He ran a nice race in 14:11 to place 37th out of 76 runners. Cooper Skeen also ran well to place 53rd in a time of 15:03. These boys continue to learn the mental and physical aspects of running and get better each race.
The middle school girls’ team had a banner day. They placed second as a team with a score of 54 losing only to Scottsbluff. The girls beat much larger teams like Chadron, Gering, Sidney, Gordon-Rushville and Pine Bluffs/Burns.
All five runners contributed to the team success. Maci Lyons placed third in a time of 12:06, bettering her time from last year in Alliance by 44 seconds. Hazel Gaukel had a great day placing 12th in a time of 13:37. She competed hard to try to get in the top 10.
The other runners played a huge role in the team’s placing. Izzy Requejo placed 24th out of 63 runners while teammate Aalyiah Pavone was right behind her in 26th. Pavone ran almost a minute and a half faster than last year, while Requejo ran 11 seconds faster.
Avery Johnson smashed her all-time personal best by 40 seconds by running 15:29 to place 36th.
All the kids are coming on strong as the end of the season approaches.
The Tigers travel to Glenrock this week to compete.
